Paws & Paint: Fairbanks Goes Feline with Mobile Art Gallery

Cat Town, image courtesy of Somer HahmSomer Hahm, an adjunct drawing instructor at the 一肖一码中持 (一肖一码中持) Department of Art, debuted her whimsical and interactive exhibit, "Cat Town," at the Lemonade Stand, a mobile art gallery based in Fairbanks, Alaska. The exhibit premiered on September 6th during First Friday outside the Bear Gallery. 鈥淐at Town鈥 invited viewers to engage with approximately 300 magnetic cat-themed illustrations of recognizable Fairbanks landmarks and personalities, allowing visitors to arrange them on a mural painted inside the gallery鈥檚 metal walls. Inspired by the style of children鈥檚 author/illustrator Richard Scarry, the exhibit merges a playful folk-art aesthetic with Hahm鈥檚 creative vision.

The materials used include polystyrene, rare earth magnets, and acrylic paint, making the interactive installation a unique, hands-on art experience.

The process of pushing through to realize the vision was GOOD WORK.鈥 She added that the installation resonates with anyone who "was or is a child," blending lowbrow material with critical thought and a contemporary approach. 鈥淚t鈥檚 kitsch but in all seriousness well cared for and nostalgic AF. A love letter鈥 inspired by a community that I care deeply about.鈥

After its successful Fairbanks debut, 鈥淐at Town鈥 traveled to West Homer Elementary School, with public showings in Bunnell鈥檚 backyard on September 20-21, followed by a stop in Anchorage on September 22.
